Lent at St. Mary's

Mother Margie's Reflection on Lent:

Repent and believe the Good News!

The season of Lent is a time to reflect, reconsider, repent, and re-orient ourselves.

We reflect on our mortality as we are reminded on Ash Wednesday that "we are dust and to dust shall return." It has been said that when we acknowledge our mortality we learn to really live.

We reconsider our priorities. Things unimportant fall away, and we try to focus on the people, practice, and things that give our lives meaning and purpose. It is a time to clear away anything that interferes with our relationship with God and one another. Sometimes we realize that it is time to let go of old ways of thinking, old ways of doing things, and to look towards something new, to new life in Christ.

Repentance is the process of turning towards something new. Emptying out the "old" makes room for something new to enter in. To repent is to recognize our sinfulness and our growing edges, to ask forgiveness, and to turn ourselves over to the presence and love of God. It is not a one-time event, but an ongoing process of turning to God and reorienting our lives to live fully in the abundance of God's grace.

May we have a Holy Lent.
